Conspicuous with virtues, this CD is a shining model of a superior university jazz program, illuminated by Chicago's DePaul University Jazz Ensemble's style and substance. Winningly steered by its zealous Director and Chair of Jazz Studies Bob Lark '“ it is among the front-running programs in the country. It enjoys a commanding level of seductive logic with jazz artistry attributed to inspirational leadership and strong curricular values while it also addresses the spirited felicity of the contrasts of the familiar and the surprising.
Recorded '˜live' at the Jazz Showcase (the latest in an annual series), the CD features the alluring catalyst of alto saxophonist Jazz Master Phil Woods who fully ignites the performances. The interactive union of Phil and the DePaul University band is not a dialogue between strangers since all parties have built a foundation for a rewarding relationship.
Phil Woods is at the peak of his distinguished career. He leaves his unmistakable signature when he starts a chorus blending immaculate execution with the delivery of a skein of melodic ideas that characterize his solos. He passes through the prism of his own personality. In sum, the combined groove of Phil Woods and the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble promise an exciting synergy in jazz. Dig it! It deserves celebration.
